This App renames bound shared parameters while retaining the formula and GUID. Where possible it will also retain the value.

General Usage Instructions

To Open the Rename Shared Parameter App. 

  • Select the “Rename Shared Parameter's” button within the “Rename Shared Parameter's” Panel of the Add-Ins Ribbon Tab.
  • This will open the “Rename Shared Parameters” dialog and display all the shared parameters within the open project, template or family document.  

 

To Rename an individual Parameter. 

  • Select the “New Name” radio button and provide the parameter's new name in the active text box.
  • Select the check box adjacent the Bound Shared Parameter to be renamed.  
  • Select the newly activated “Rename Parameters” button.
  • NOTE the selection of Bound Shared Parameters is limited to one parameter when in this mode.

 

To Provide a Prefix and/ or Suffix to multiple Parameters.

  • Select the “Prefix/Suffix” radio button and provide the parameters new prefix and or suffix name in the active respective text boxes.
  • You can check individual “Bound Shared Parameters” or use the “Select All” radio button to select the required Parameter names to be amended.  
  • Select the newly activated “Rename Parameters” button.

 

Filter. 

  • The name filter provides aid to the identification of the desired Bound shared parameters.  
  • NOTE the “Select All” button will only select those Bound Shared Parameters visible after filtering.

 

Shared Parameters File.

  • Using the navigation button open your Shared parameters file. 
  • This will activate the “Match Shared Parameters to Bound Shared Parameters” checkboxes.
  • Selecting the “Highlight Matching GUID” checkbox will highlight in light blue all bound shared parameters with matching GUID to those within the shared parameters file just opened.
  • Selecting the “Select Matching Parameters by GUID” checkbox will select all bound shared parameters with matching GUID to those bound within the shared parameters file just opened.
  • The above procedures can then be utilized to rename an individual parameter or prefix and or suffix the names of multiple parameters.
  • NOTE selecting the Bound Shared Parameter “ID” or “GUID” will also highlight in light green its equivalent Shared Parameter from the loaded file. The view will auto-scroll to the parameter if it exists. This can be extremely valuable when working with non-office standard files where parameter GUID’s match but the names do not.
  • If the ‘New Name’ radio button is selected you can populate the name textbox by double right mouse click the shared parameter name.

 

Shared Parameters Filter.

  • There are two filters that can be applied to the shared parameters to aid the identification of the desired parameter. These can be used individually or combined. The two filters are a drop-down Parameter Group and a bespoke name filter. 
  • The “Highlight Matching GUID” and “Select Matching Parameters by GUID”, highlight and select those bound parameters matching the GUID of the shared parameters file just opened. 
  • The process is the same for Project, Template and Family documents.

 

Find and Replace

  • Select the “Replace” radio button and search for the text you would like to replace by utilizing the filter.
  • Provide the "Replace with:" text. 
  • You can check individual “Bound Shared Parameters” or use the “Select All” radio button to select the required Parameter names to be amended.  
  • Select the newly activated “Rename Parameters” button.

 

NOTE

  • Note the number of shared parameters displayed within a document may be in excess of those displayed within the "Project Parameters" dialog found within the Settings Panel of the Manage Tab or  “Family Types” dialog found within the Properties Panel of the Create Tab. These additional parameters cannot have their name changed as they have been deleted from the document but not truly purged from it. 
  • These Legacy Shared Parameters can be removed from your document with the "PurgeSharedParam" App.
  • If a parameter name is to be changed and this parameter is used in a schedule or tag etc. then once it has been renamed it will require adding back into the schedule or tag etc.
  • Parameters highlighted with Violet text are parameters whose DATATYPE is a FAMILYTYPE and currently cannot have its name changed.
  • The characters permitted within a new parameter name, suffix or prefix have been restricted to Alphanumeric "-", "_" &  "." with spaces. 

Commands

Installation/Uninstallation

The installer that ran when you downloaded this app/plug-in from Autodesk App Store will start installing the app/plug-in. OR, simply double-click the downloaded installer to install the app/plugin.

To uninstall this plug-in, exit the Autodesk product if you are currently running it, simply rerun the installer, and select the "Uninstall" button. OR, click Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features (Windows 10/11) and uninstall as you would any other application from your system.

Additional Information

Renaming project Shared Parameters bound to multiple categories and associated data is a resources heavy process. It is recommended that your system should have a minimum of 16GB Ram and upon completion of the renaming that the file is saved and Autodesk® Revit® closed and reopened.

In the unlikely event that a project shared parameter has the same GUID as a Family Shared parameter the associated data of the Family Shared Parameter will be lost.
