Manufacturing Sustainability Insights
Win64, EnglishAutodesk, Inc.
Meet MSI, a Fusion add-in enabling real-time carbon impact assessment of designs. Powered by Gravity Climate, MSI aids in creating sustainable products by analyzing design and manufacturing factors.
General Usage Instructions
Starting the Workflow
- Once downloaded, locate the add-in in the inspection section of the "Utilities" tab. Activate the MSI add-in by clicking on the CO2e icon.
- (Note: If MSI isn't appearing, please ensure that the addin is set to run on startup within the 'Script Addin' section.)
Analysis Set Up:
- To initiate the MSI workflow, select the body you wish to analyze.
- Next, choose a manufacturing type: Additive, Subtractive, or Injection Processes.
- MSI identifies the material assigned to your body in an Autodesk® Fusion® and selects the closest matching material from the MSI library. If needed, you can manually select a different material from the dropdown menu.
- MSI calculates your carbon emissions based on your manufacturing location. Therefore, specify the region and country for accurate calculations.
- Remember to save your changes to record the values in the history tab.
- MSI utilizes these factors to estimate the embodied carbon emissions of your design from a Cradle-to-Gate perspective.
Process Comparison:
- After setting up an initial analysis, proceed to the 'Compare Manufacturing Process' tab.
- Here, you can delve deeper into specific manufacturing processes. Currently, MSI allows you to compare different metal and polymer additive processes, and subtractive manufacturing like CNC milling, turning, and sheet metal. We've also included an injection molding calculator.
- The carbon emissions of a component are divided into three main areas:
- Manufacturing Emissions: These are the CO2e emissions resulting from the energy consumed during the manufacturing process (measured in kWh). This value largely depends on your chosen process and manufacturing location. The carbon intensity of the country's energy grid significantly impacts this value.
- Material Emissions: These are the embodied carbon emissions within the material used for manufacturing. This value relates to the emissions generated from extracting and processing the material from its raw form to a state suitable for manufacturing.
- Transportation: This denotes the carbon emissions involved in the supply chain, from transporting the raw material from its source to the processing facility and finally to your manufacturing location. This value is proportional to the mass of your products and the amount of raw material required for manufacturing.
Calculations Settings:
- We aim to ensure that the MSI workflow isn't merely a 'black box' calculator. Therefore, the 'Calculations' tab provides insights into the data being used.
- The tool utilizes the mass, volume, and bounding box of the selected body. Along with the user's selections and the climate strategy outlined in the methodology documentation, the carbon values are computed.
- This data is transmitted to Gravity Climate's API, which then calculates the carbon values based on the emission factors within their platform.
History View:
- As you modify your design and save changes, MSI logs these changes, along with the corresponding carbon emissions, in the 'History' tab. This feature should enhance your understanding of how your design and manufacturing decisions contribute to reducing your products' carbon footprint.
Persistent View:
- MSI is designed to be a tool that integrates seamlessly into your design workflow. With the 'Persistent View', you can continuously track your design's emissions with ease.
- First, set up the analysis on the body following the steps described earlier, then open the 'Persistent View' within the 'Settings' tab and close the main MSI palette.
- By simply clicking on a body in the design tree or highlighting bodies with your mouse, the widget will compute the values for you.
- This feature also supports multi-component analyses. By highlighting multiple parts, MSI will analyze each body and calculate an individual CO2e value based on their specific settings.
Commands
Installation/Uninstallation
